Illuminating the build-out of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) with small cell S

چکیده
The global popularity and rapid proliferation of smartphones and other types of mobile devices has greatly expanded the amount of mobile data traffic throughout the wireless cellular network. Research studies from Mobile Experts, Cisco VNI and Ericsson have shown that global mobile traffic reached 1,000 petabytes per month and is projected to grow multi-fold in the coming years. This is a significant inflection point in the industry because operators have been working to increase their Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) on a similar pace with that of the exploding consumer demand for data communications over their networks. The availability of Long Term Evolution (LTE)-based equipment is motivating upgrades to the mobile network because LTE enables higher spectrum efficiency, which in turn drives down operating costs. In parallel with this transition to 4G (LTE), mobile operators are also actively upgrading their infrastructure to heterogeneous networks (HetNet) composed of both small cell base stations and the existing macro base stations. Small cells can boost network capacity, throughput and efficiency. For example, AT&T is planning to deploy at least 40,000 small cells by the end of 2014. Texas Instruments’ (TI’s) TCI6630K2L System-on-Chip (SoC) has been designed as a highly integrated small cell base stations supporting LTE’s radio communication layers 1, 2, 3 and transport, as well as the Digital Radio Front End (DRFE) on a single chip to reduce circuit board real estate, cost and power consumption. To ease software development, TI provides the Base Station SoftwarePac, which jump starts small cell development and enables carrier-grade small cell deployments.

Decoupling the uplink and downlink user association improves the throughput of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) and balances the traffic load of macro- and small- base stations. Recently, fiber-wireless HetNets (FiWi-HetNets) have been considered as viable solutions for access networks. Improving capacity and coverage is one of the main issues in next-generation wireless communication. Heterogeneous networks (HetNets), which is currently investigated in LTE-Advanced standard, is a promising solution to enhance capacity and eliminate coverage holes in a cost-efficient manner. A HetNet is composed of existing macrocells and various types of small cells. By deploying small cells ...
متن کاملCooperative Interference Mitigation Algorithm in Heterogeneous Networks
Heterogeneous hetworks (HetNets) have been introduced as an emerging technology in order to meet the increasing demand for mobile data. HetNets are a combination of multi-layer networks such as macrocells and small cells. In such networks, users may suffer significant cross-layer interference. To manage this interference, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced enhanced Int...

Data traffic demands in cellular networks today are increasing at an exponential rate, giving rise to the development of heterogeneous networks (HetNets), in which small cells complement traditional macro cells by extending coverage to indoor areas. However, the deployment of small cells as parts of HetNets creates a key challenge for operators' careful network planning. In particular, massive ...

In this paper, we investigate the coverage performance and energy efficiency of multi-tier heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) which are composed of macrocells and different types of small cells, i.e., picocells and femtocells. By virtue of stochastic geometry tools, we model the multi-tier HetNets based on a Poisson point process (PPP) and analyze the Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR) v...
